What is a mud run?

A mud run is a running race with obstacles built into the course: walls to climb, nets to crawl under, water to wade through and, usually, a mud pit or two. It's the everyday name for an obstacle course race (OCR). You run between obstacles, and most people finish slower and dirtier than they would in a road 5K. Not every obstacle race is muddy, though, so read the listing if that's the point.

Types of mud runs and obstacle races in Texas

Stand-alone obstacle races. The obstacle course is the main event. On the current calendar that's CTX Wrestling Presents: Mats to Mud Obstacle 5K + Youth 1 Mile (Hutto), Run for Freedom Obstacles 5K (Victoria), ASCO Spartacus Dash (Belton) and 2027 Badass Human Race Presented by GECU (El Paso).

Obstacle races inside a bigger race day. Hippo Trail Fest (Hutto) runs an obstacle 5K alongside regular trail distances, so a group can split between the obstacles and a straight trail race.

Kids' obstacle courses. A few regular races add a short obstacle course for children. See kids' obstacle courses below.

National obstacle series. Big-brand series sell entries on their own websites rather than RunSignup and run at ranches outside the cities, usually with several course lengths on one weekend. How to train for a mud run

Build the run first. Every obstacle race on this page is about 5K, and you'll spend most of the race running between obstacles. If you can run or run-walk 3 miles comfortably, you're ready to start adding strength work.
Add grip and upper-body strength. Walls, ropes and cargo nets are about pulling your own weight. Pull-ups (or assisted rows), dead hangs, push-ups and farmer's carries twice a week go a long way.
Run off-road. Uneven ground, roots and mud are harder on ankles than pavement. Do some runs on dirt or grass trails, and practice getting up and running again after crawling or climbing.
Respect the heat. Train early in the morning and drink before you're thirsty. Our heat tips for Texas runners apply double when you're wet and muddy.

What to wear and bring to a mud run

Shoes with grip that you don't mind ruining. Trail shoes with deep lugs hold better in mud than road trainers. Lace them tight, or double-knot, so the mud doesn't take them. A Texas running store can fit you for a trail shoe.
Fitted, quick-drying clothes. Skip cotton, which stays heavy when wet. Snug shorts or tights and a synthetic shirt won't snag on walls and nets.
Gloves, optional. Some runners like thin grip gloves for ropes and walls. Check the race rules first.
A post-race kit. A towel, a full change of clothes, flip-flops and a trash bag for the muddy stuff. Some venues have hoses or rinse stations, but not all, so check the race page.
