On the Western States list for the 2027 and 2028 lotteries (checked Sept. 26, 2026 at wser.org): Brazos Bend 100 (finish under 32 hours), Bandera 100K (under 18 hours), Rocky Raccoon 100 (under 30 hours), and the Dinosaur Valley 100K and 100-mile (under 22 and 35 hours). Races held after Nov. 8, 2026 count toward the 2028 lottery, not 2027.

Every runner starts a 4.167-mile loop at the top of each hour and must finish before the next hour begins. 24 loops is 100 miles, and the last runner to finish a loop alone wins. Instead of a set distance, you run as far as you can in a fixed time, usually 6, 12, 24 or 48 hours, on a short loop. Most let you rest and restart, which makes them a friendly first ultra. Nearly all Texas ultras run from October through April, when temperatures are safer for long days outside. Summer ultras exist, usually as night races or timed loops with short laps, so check the start time and cutoff.
