Point to point from the west side over Transmountain Road to the east side: a 6-mile climb, then a fast downhill to the finish. Capped at 500 runners, 6:30 a.m. start, and the course closes after 4 hours. Transportation runs from the finish back to the start.

The 50th annual YMCA Turkey Trot starts at Montana and Ange on Thanksgiving morning. Racers are capped at 3,200, and shirts and medals must be picked up in person.

For 2027 the race returns to a downtown finish, as at the first edition in 2007, which the organizer says gives runners a net decline to the finish. The marathon is a Boston Marathon qualifier and a qualifier for the Abbott Age Group World Championships. Marathon 7:00 a.m., half 7:20 a.m., 5K 7:40 a.m. (MST); the marathon course closes at 1:00 p.m.
El Paso has one full marathon on the calendar: the Michelob Ultra El Paso Marathon on Sunday, February 28, 2027. The organizer says the 2027 race returns to a downtown finish, as at the first edition in 2007, giving runners a net decline to the finish, and that it is a qualifier for the Boston Marathon and the Abbott Age Group World Championships. The marathon starts at 7:00 a.m. Mountain time, the half at 7:20 and the 5K at 7:40, and the marathon course closes at 1:00 p.m. (RunSignup dates the listing by Saturday’s kids’ dash.) El Paso is high. The city sits at roughly 3,800 feet, according to the City of El Paso, well above Austin, Dallas, Houston or San Antonio. Coming from sea level, easy miles can feel harder for the first few days. Run by effort, not pace, and give a goal race a little more patience early.
The air is dry. You sweat less visibly in the desert, which makes it easy to under-drink. Carry water on long runs and in the mountains; Texas Parks and Wildlife tells Franklin Mountains visitors to carry plenty of water and a cell phone.
Fall and winter are race season. October through February is when El Paso’s biggest races run, from the Transmountain Half in November to the El Paso Marathon at the end of February.
Hills are part of the deal. Transmountain Road climbs for 6 miles before the descent, and the trails in Franklin Mountains State Park are rocky and steep. See our Texas trail racing guide.

Packet pickup is Saturday, November 7, at FirstLight Federal Credit Union headquarters, and there is no race-day pickup. Entry is $75.
Yes. The 50th annual YMCA Turkey Trot (5K and 1-mile walk, Montana and Ange) and the 18th annual Iron Turkey 5K (from Up and Running on N. Mesa, 7:30 a.m.) are both on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 26, 2026. Both cap entries. The Iron Turkey has no race-day registration or packet pickup; the YMCA race takes day-of entries on site only if space is left.
