Getting ready for your first turkey trot

  • Run-walk is fine. Plenty of turkey trotters walk part or all of the course. Planned walk breaks from the first mile make a 5K comfortable for new runners; our guide to the run-walk method for Texas races explains how to set your intervals.
  • Start now, keep it easy. Three short run-walk sessions a week between now and Thanksgiving is enough to finish a 5K. Add a few minutes at a time rather than chasing pace.
  • Dress for the morning, not the forecast high. Late-November mornings in Texas can start cool and warm up fast. Layers you can shed, and a throwaway shirt at the start, work well.
