Backyard ultras in Texas

In a backyard ultra, everyone starts a 4.167-mile loop (a "yard") at the top of every hour. Finish it and be back in the start corral before the next hour, or you're out. 24 yards is 100 miles. Running your first Texas trail race

  • Start short. Most races on this page also offer a 5K, 10K or half. Expect to run slower than on the road; roots, rocks and climbs add minutes per mile, so race by effort, not pace. The run-walk method works well on trails, and even ultra winners walk the steep climbs.
  • Know the terrain. Texas trails range from rocky, cactus-lined Hill Country climbs to sandy East Texas pine forest and flat coastal-plain park loops. The race description usually says which, and whether the course is loops or point-to-point.
  • Carry water. Aid stations on trails are farther apart than on road courses, and some ultras are deliberately minimal. Read the race's aid-station and required-gear notes.
  • Respect the heat. Even in fall, a clear Texas afternoon can turn hot. Our heat tips for Texas runners and why your easy pace slows in the heat apply double on exposed trails.
  • Check park rules. 15 races on this page mention a state park in the listing. Park races may charge a separate day-use entry fee and limit parking, so plan to arrive early.

Trail running gear

  • Shoes with grip. Lugged trail shoes hold better on loose limestone and wet clay than road trainers. On smooth, flat park loops, many runners race in road shoes, so read the course notes. A Texas running store can fit you.
  • A handheld or vest. For anything past 10K, carry your own water between aid stations.

  • Headlamp for long races. 100-milers and backyard ultras run through the night, and many 50-milers start before sunrise.

What is a backyard ultra?

A backyard ultra is a "last runner standing" race. Everyone starts a loop of about 4.17 miles at the top of each hour, and you have to finish it and be back in the start corral before the next hour starts. Keep going as long as you can; the last runner to finish a loop alone wins. How much does a trail race cost in Texas?

Current RunSignup entry fees for the races on this page run $15 to $545 for the cheapest adult event, before processing fees. Short trail 5Ks and 10Ks sit at the low end and 100-milers at the top. When is trail running season in Texas?

Most Texas trail races and nearly all the ultras run between October and April, when mornings are cooler. Summer trail races do happen, usually with early or night starts and shorter distances. Always check the start time and plan for heat.
