The short version: The Garmin fēnix 9 ($999.99) and fēnix 9 Pro ($1,099.99) came out August 25, 2026. Garmin quotes up to 29 days of smartwatch battery for the fēnix 9, 31 for the fēnix 9 Pro and 57 for the Pro Solar, and adds new stamina tracking. The Apple Watch Ultra 4 ($799) went on sale September 18. Apple rates it at 50 hours of normal use and up to 45 hours of GPS workouts, and adds a daily readiness score.

Garmin fēnix 9: stamina tracking and a brighter screen
For runners, the headline feature is stamina. Garmin’s new stamina zones and stamina curve show, in its words, “how their endurance changes over time based on fitness gains and training history.” The standard fēnix 9 gets an AMOLED screen that Garmin says is twice as bright as before, and the fēnix 9 Pro goes up to 3,000 nits. The 51 mm Pro has Garmin’s first 1.5-inch AMOLED display and the line’s first titanium case.
Apple Watch Ultra 4: readiness and a longer battery
Apple’s biggest addition for athletes is a readiness score, a daily 0–10 rating with a suggestion: Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready or Go For It. The Ultra 4 measures heart rate every five seconds. Apple says it tracks heart rate variability up to 24 times more often than earlier models. Battery life is the other upgrade: up to 50 hours of normal use, and up to 45 hours of outdoor workouts in Max Extended Workout mode, which Apple says is enough for a 100-mile race.
If $799 is too much, Apple’s Series 12 starts at $399 and is rated at up to 24 hours of battery and up to 10 hours of outdoor workouts. That covers most road races, but not a long trail ultra.
Already own a Garmin? Check your update
Garmin’s September 22 software update adds features to watches people already own. The fēnix 8 series, Forerunner 570, Forerunner 970, Venu 4 and vívoactive 6 get voice control (“Okay, Garmin”), personalized quick workouts and new Garmin Run Coach plans. The plans can now include run/walk workouts and lower-volume training. That fits a newer or returning runner getting ready for a Thanksgiving 5K. Our run-walk guide explains how to use it.
What matters in Texas
- Heat and heart rate: heart rate climbs on hot, humid runs even at the same pace, so a watch’s readiness or stamina estimate will read your summer runs as harder. Read why your zone 2 pace drops in Texas heat before you trust the numbers.
- Trail ultras: for Hill Country 50Ks and 100-milers, battery life under GPS is the number that matters. Check it against the Texas race calendar events you plan to run.
- Screen in the sun: a brighter screen helps you read the watch in midday Texas sun.
