What is new for runners

  • Grade-adjusted pace: workouts can target grade-adjusted pace, and the watch shows a grade-adjusted rolling pace. Garmin says it helps athletes hold the right effort on hilly terrain. On a Hill Country climb your real pace drops, but your effort should not spike.
  • Stamina zones and the stamina curve: the same tools Garmin introduced on the fēnix 9. The stamina curve shows how your endurance changes with fitness and training history.
  • Garmin Epic: logs a multiday activity as one event, useful for stage races and long fastpacks.
  • LED flashlight: white and red light, built in.
  • Rucking: set your pack weight and train to target metrics.
  • Maps: Garmin says map panning is 30% faster, with a new perspective view and 50% more RAM than the Enduro 3.

Why it fits Texas ultra season

Texas ultra season runs from fall into spring. The Texas ultra season guide covers Cactus Rose, the Big Tex Backyard, Brazos Bend 100, Bandera and Rocky Raccoon. For 100-milers and backyard ultras, the number that matters is how long the watch records GPS. The Enduro 4 is built for that, and the 320-hour solar figure leaves room for multiday efforts. See every race by distance on our Texas ultramarathons page and the Texas trail race calendar.

The flashlight matters more after Nov. 1, when the clocks fall back and evening runs end in the dark. It does not replace a headlamp on a technical trail, but it helps at an aid station or on a dark road to the trailhead. Our guide to running in the dark in Texas covers lights and visibility.

The ruck features match the races, too. Several Texas trail events this fall have ruck divisions. The Inks Lake Trail Run/Ruck near Burnet on Oct. 17 and Fields of Gold in Marble Falls on Oct. 24 both list a half-marathon ruck.

The Enduro 4 costs $100 less than the cheapest fēnix 9 and is built around battery life. The fēnix 9 is the better everyday watch if you want a bright AMOLED screen or a smaller case. Our fēnix 9 vs. Apple Watch Ultra 4 comparison has the full fēnix specs.

One note on heart-rate data in Texas

Stamina and training-load estimates use heart rate. On hot, humid Texas runs your heart rate climbs at the same pace, so the watch will read those runs as harder. Read why your zone 2 pace slows in Texas heat before you chase the numbers.
