The short version: Bigfoot Running Company's Day of the Dead Half Marathon is running a six-city Texas run through October. Dallas and Galveston race Saturday, Oct. 10, Waco and Corpus Christi race Sunday, Oct. 11, Houston follows Oct. 17 and Fort Worth Oct. 18. The half marathon was $76 to $85 on RunSignup as of Oct. 5, and Galveston, Waco, Corpus Christi and Fort Worth step up $2 when the current tier closes on Oct. 6.

Where and when

The series is a good example of a race that is easy to miss if you only search for your own city. Each stop is its own RunSignup listing under the same Dia de los Muertos theme. The Austin-area stop (San Marcos, Oct. 3) and the San Antonio-area stop (Universal City, Oct. 4) have already run. Here is what is left:

Prices are the race fee only, from RunSignup's fee schedule on Oct. 5. RunSignup adds a processing fee at checkout, roughly $7 to $9 depending on the event. Dallas and Houston are already at $85 for the half and do not rise on Oct. 6. Galveston, Waco and Corpus Christi move to $80, and Fort Worth moves to $78 on Oct. 6 and $80 on Oct. 13. If one of the Oct. 10–11 races is your plan, the cheapest day to register is today.

What you get

The race pages describe a pre-race costume contest with a Best Costume award and a post-race rally tent with live music and Mexican food and drinks, and the Dallas page says every finisher gets a custom medal and shirt. The banner above shows the medal and shirt design. Dallas and Corpus Christi list an 8 a.m. half marathon start, and Galveston lists 7 a.m. at Stewart Beach. Check your stop's schedule on RunSignup for the other cities, since packet pickup windows run to roughly 20 minutes after the race starts on some listings.

Which distance fits you?

Every stop offers the full menu: half marathon, quarter marathon (6.55 miles), 5K, 1 mile, a kids dash, a virtual half and a volunteer-then-run 5K. That makes it a flexible pick for a mixed group, where one person runs 13.1 and another does the 5K and meets them at the rally tent.

This is a festive, costume-friendly race rather than a PR-hunting one. If you want a fast fall half, compare options on the half marathons in Texas list. For costumes with less mileage, the Halloween races in Texas hub has 5Ks and fun runs all month.

Heat check for October

Galveston and Corpus Christi are coastal and Waco is inland, so expect humid starts even in October. If you are coming off a summer of slowed-down miles, our guide to easy pace in Texas heat is a useful read before a Gulf Coast half.
