The short version: Texas has a food or drink race nearly every fall weekend. The standouts: the ATX Taco Challenge in Austin (Oct. 25), the Shipley Donut Dash in Houston (Oct. 17), the North Texas Hotdog 5k in Garland (Nov. 14), the Great Houston Pie Run (Nov. 21), and the Shiner Beer Run (Nov. 21), which adds a full marathon for its 15th year.

Everything below comes from the organizers' own RunSignup listings, as synced to our Texas race calendar on September 27. Tap any race name for current fees, start times and the registration link. Fees rise and shirts run out, so check before you go.

Tacos

  • ATX Taco Challenge, Austin, Sun., Oct. 25. A 5K run/walk from Fleet Feet Austin on Walter Seaholm Dr. at 8:30 a.m., with stops along the route at some of Austin's taco spots. The organizer lists a $40 fee that covers four tacos (one from each restaurant), a bib and a medal. It is a social run, not an official race: roads stay open, you follow the route on the RunGo app, and registration closes when they have enough people.
  • El Taco Loco, San Antonio, Sat., Nov. 14. Despite the name, this one is a real trail race, from 5K and 10K up to 25K, 50K, 100K and 100 miles, on mostly single-track at the Land Heritage Institute along the Medina River. The 100-miler starts at 6 a.m. For more like it, see trail races in Texas.

Donuts, hot dogs and pie

  • Shipley Donut Dash, Houston, Sat., Oct. 17. A 10K (7:00 a.m.), 5K (8:00 a.m.) and Kids Dash (9:45 a.m.) at Sam Houston Race Park. Every finisher gets a donut-shaped medal and a Shipley donut and coffee, and there are two donut-hole stations on the course. A $20 add-on gets you a donut tutu, socks, headband and glasses. The race benefits Kids' Meals, which delivers free lunches to preschool children in Houston.
  • 84 Runners/Shipley 5K Donut Dash, Woodway (Waco), Sat., Oct. 10. A stroller-friendly 5K and 1-mile fun run at First Woodway. The organizer lists $25 for the 5K and $15 for the mile, with donuts and medals after the race and proceeds to Together for Good.
  • North Texas Hotdog 5k, Garland, Sat., Nov. 14. The whole description is one line: after every mile, you have to finish a hot dog before you keep going. There is a regular division if you'd rather just run. Registration was closed when we checked, so watch the listing.
  • Great Houston Pie Run, Houston, Sat., Nov. 21. A half marathon, 10K, 5K and kids' 1K the Saturday before Thanksgiving, with pie and beer at the finish. It is stop No. 8 in the Houston Holiday Series and pitches itself to anyone who wants to sleep in on Thanksgiving. If you'd rather race on the day, see turkey trots in Texas.

The organizer says USATF certification is pending and expected by race day, and every marathon finisher gets a finisher jacket made for this year only. Proceeds go to the Boot Campaign for veterans and military families. It is one of the few marathons in Texas in late November; see all marathons in Texas for others.
  • Beer City Half Fort Worth, Sat., Oct. 10. A half marathon, 10K and 5K along the Trinity River from Panther Island Pavilion, plus the Beat the Beast Beer Mile, a beer stroll, a dog dash and an evening festival.

  • El Último Desmadre Beer Mile, Alamo (Rio Grande Valley), Sat., Dec. 12. Five laps and five beers, chip-timed, run in waves from 4:00 p.m., with live music and brick-oven pizza. 21 and over.
  • Santa's Beer Run 5K, Salado, Sat., Dec. 19, at Barrow Brewing Company. The last of the brewery's 2026 series; the medal interlocks with the other two. Non-alcoholic drinks are available for runners under 21.
  • Brewdolph's Rednosed Reinbeer Run, Dripping Springs, Sat., Dec. 19. A first-year holiday 5K and festival at 12 Fox Beer Co., with armed forces and first-responder pricing. More holiday options are on our Christmas races in Texas guide.

Wine runs

October is Texas Wine Month, and several wineries turn their grounds into a 5K course:

Before you sign up

  • Read the fine print on drinks. Beer miles and most beer passes are 21 and over; several races offer non-alcoholic options or a "party pass" for friends who don't run.
  • Eat-while-you-run events are not PR days. The taco and hot dog races are for fun. If you want a fast fall 5K or 10K, browse 5Ks in Texas and 10Ks in Texas, or the full October and November calendars.
  • Register early for the shirt. Several of these races guarantee a shirt only by a deadline, and some cap entries.
  • New to racing? A fun run is a great first race. Our run-walk guide will get you to the finish, tacos and all.
