The Day of the Dead Half Marathon series

Six of the 19 races come from one series, and it hits Texas over two weekends. Each stop lists the same menu on RunSignup: a half marathon, a quarter marathon (6.55 miles), a 5K, a 1-mile run, a kids dash and a volunteer-then-run option. The organizer's descriptions promise aid stations, live music and Mexican food and drinks at a post-race tent.

Pick by weekend and drive time. Dallas and Galveston go Saturday, Oct. 10, with Waco and Corpus Christi the next morning. Houston follows on Saturday, Oct. 17, and Fort Worth closes the run on Sunday, Oct. 18. Fort Worth is the cheapest half of the six at $78 until its price moves on Oct. 13. If a half this month is a tune-up for a bigger winter race, our half marathons in Texas page has every other option, and the Houston half marathon guide covers the sold-out Aramco Houston Half and its alternatives.

Oct. 31: six races on one Saturday

Día de los Muertos falls on Nov. 1 and 2, but Halloween Saturday is when most Texas organizers chose to run.

  • Camino De Los Muertos, Lewisville. The long-distance option: 100K, 50K, 25K, 10K and 5K on the trails at the Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area, with entry from $50 to $155. It also shows up in our ultramarathons in Texas calendar.
  • JUNTOS! One Community 5K, Austin. An inaugural race whose organizers say it is centered on Día de los Muertos traditions and "is not a Halloween festival." The 5K is $40 until the price goes to $45 on Oct. 26.
  • Two El Paso options. Socorro ISD and Aetna host a free 5K run and 1-mile walk at the district's Student Activities Complex; the organizer notes it is not timed or competitive and online signup closes Oct. 30 at noon. Across town, the inaugural Flowar 5K at Album Park kicks off the 41st KLAQ Halloween Parade, lets runners write a loved one's name on their bib, and gives a Día de los Muertos medal to the first 500 finishers.
  • Nacogdoches. The sixth annual run pairs a 5K with a 1-miler for runners in inflatable costumes.
  • Selma. The Not-So-Fun Run at Retama Park is a timed, flat 5K with free pancakes afterward, benefiting the Greater Randolph Area Services Program.

Smaller runs worth the trip

Lubbock's Nov. 7 run is the 10th annual, with a community altar where runners are invited to bring photos of loved ones. The 5K is $40 until Oct. 18. San Antonio's McAllister Park 5K on Oct. 25 is the longest-running race on this list, now in its 16th year, and holds a costume contest. In the Valley, the National Butterfly Center 5K in Mission (8 a.m., Nov. 1) lists chip timing, finisher medals and a shirt deadline of Oct. 14, and Pharr's Muertos Run starts at 7:30 a.m. the same morning. Amarillo's $25 5K on Oct. 17 raises money for the Barrio Christmas Toy Drive.
